Celebrate Chesapeake - The James A. Michener Centennial

The year 2007 celebrates the 100th birthday of James Michener, author of Chesapeake, a novel rich in the history and lore of the Chesapeake Bay. In honor of Michener's birth year and the heritage of the Chesapeake region, the Talbot County Free Library will partner with other community organizations to sponsor Celebrate Chesapeake™, a series of local programs and activities celebrating life and history in this culturally rich area.

A One-Book Program featuring the novel Chesapeake, hosted by the Talbot County Free Library. Activities will include Chesapeake book discussions, and a guest speaker series focusing on the author, the book, and the region. The Maryland Room of the Library will also host an exhibit of Michener's notes and other materials from his stay on the Eastern Shore.

A Michener Centennial Celebration Juried Art Show entitled “Life on the Chesapeake”. This show, hosted by the Talbot County Visual Arts Center, will be open to all artists who have painted or drawn scenes of Chesapeake life. Cash awards will be given to the first, second and third prize winners. A reception honoring the finalists will be held September 7.

Icons of the Chesapeake, hosted by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, featuring the well-known symbols of the bay such as the blue heron, oysters and skipjacks.

A Student Writing Competition and Art Show sponsored by Talbot County Public Schools.

Pickering Creek Harvest Festival, which will include a Celebrate Chesapeake™ exhibit.
